From: A Steakhouse for Any Occasion
A stylish setting that ladies will love: Keefer's (20 W. Kinzie
St., 312/467-9525), boasts a sleek, modern bistro feel and has
a broader menu than most steakhouses, with seafood, entrée
salads and roasted chicken and chops. But don't mistake this award-winning
venue for steakhouse-lite: its 22-oz. T-bone and 17-oz. corn-fed
New York strip steak can compete with the manliest offerings in
town. On the wine list you'll find more than 110 labels, with plenty
of big reds.
Few steak houses advertise their broiler men, but the barrier-busting
Keefer's hired acclaimed chef John Hogan to run the kitchen. Hogan's
definition of a steak-house menu breaks all conventions by including
his signature bistro fare, inventive daily specials (pray for
the seafood-rich bouillabaisse), and plenty of fish offerings as
well as New York strips and hefty porterhouses. The circular room
drops the he-man pose, too. All of which explains why Keefer's
pulls the most diverse and gender-balanced crowd of the meat market.
